Looking into the cybersecurity landscape from 2023 to 2024 gives us important insights into how digital security is changing. The last 18 months have been a strange time for the SaaS ecosystem, especially cybersecurity. There has been a dramatic increase in acquisitions, a lack of the large Series C and Series D funding rounds we saw in 2022, and a large amount of layoffs on top….
The early-stage cyber landscape has been full of acquisitions in the last 18 months. Some notable logos that have been acquired are: Talon which was acquired by Palo Alto Networks, Authomize which was acquired by Delinea and Oort which Cisco acquired. The consistent theme here is that cybersecurity is ever-evolving it is the one vertical that has unlimited potential and is arguably recession-proof.
But, what does this tell us about the cyber market?
It tells us that it is ever-evolving and that there are always new niches and new technologies. It tells that the legacy brands want to add to their portfolio of products. But also it begs the question is the IPO aspiration dying?
There are currently less than 30 cybersecurity listed on the US stock exchange—food for thought.
Funding took a big hit across all global stages in 2023. Early-stage funding dropped by over 40%, late-stage by 37%, and seed funding by just over 30%.
But let’s not lose sight of the bigger picture: Overall funding in 2023 dipped by less than 20% compared to the pre-pandemic years of 2018 to 2020.
However it is not all doom and gloom, cybersecurity will always be important because we’re all vulnerable to cybercrime, which is common and poses an economic issue. Moreover, cybercrime erodes personal privacy and is a threat to national security. With rates of cybercrime increasing, the need for robust cybersecurity measures becomes even more critical.
Despite the ups and downs in the cybersecurity landscape from 2023 to 2024, it’s important to remember how crucial it is. Cyber threats keep changing, so we need new and strong cybersecurity tools to stay safe online. Moving forward, we need to keep adapting and investing in better ways to protect ourselves in the digital world.
