Devin by Cognition AI – A Paradigm Shift in AI Engineering?
Devin by Cognition AI, a stealth AI start-up, was recently announced as the company’s new AI software engineer along with its Series A funding of $21M! Their demo was impressive, showing that based on even a simple prompt, Devin can complete the entire project it’s been tasked with. It also showcases every step of the process as it’s doing so. It even sets up testing and debugs the code as it goes, essentially covering the entire software development process by itself from end to end.
Devin by Cognition AI looks as if it’s ahead of other AI assistants in the space, considering the complexity of the tasks it can handle. Cognition AI is claiming that they have hit a major milestone in showcasing the ability of computers to reason. If true, this is a step removed from the LLMs we are now used to, considering they essentially only “predict” the best word to generate next will be based on their training data.
What are the concerns?
There are a significant number of practical and ethical concerns when it comes to the implementation of AI models. Still, one thing that’s often overlooked is the idea of handing total control over to a model for a task. AI at the moment is seen mostly as merely lending a helping hand in various industries. But is this the first sign of a model being capable of replacing a person’s job?
It’s too early to judge, but I don’t think this is as much of an issue as is often said. The reality is that humans make significantly more mistakes in manual tasks than their computer-automated counterparts. Eventually the same will be true of AI models. Whether we’ll be willing to hand over our jobs to our AI overlords one day will be a question that everyone will be asking soon. It’s vital to be mindful of the pitfalls of charging forward without thinking of the consequences. But it’s hard not to accept that AI will be a significant part of our lives in the near future.
Building a product and a company while navigating these complex issues is hard enough. But it can be even harder when you don’t have the right sales team to take your solutions to market. How do you find specialised talent who have experience in such a new field?
